Myth: Yoga is for white people

Yoga is a spiritual practice that came to us from Southeast Asia and parts of northern Africa, lands of various shades of brown people. As it developed and became more popular in this country, it grew along with all the cultural and racial biases and capitalistic practices in its delivery and accessibility. But at its root, the teachings of yoga share that each person has the capacity to awaken to their Self, their wholeness, and their fullness. Yoga as a spiritual discipline has wisdom and compassion practices, practices that open doorways to the subtle yet layered depths of vastness and freedom and joy within. This was and is for all human beings, regardless of the color of our skin.

Not all streams of yogic lineages were shared with all people, but many, like the Shakti-Shaiva Tantra were offered to all genders, all castes, householders/ those living in the world, and all who were heart drawn to knowing the Self.

Representation makes a difference. That’s why our teachers at Full Radiance reflect the diversity in our community.Yoga is for all people.
